1-International Affairs

  • At least 12 people have been killed in a shooting incident at the Paris office of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo Yesterday. Heavily armed gunmen shouting slogans stormed the newspaper office Yesterday and shot dead at least 12 people in the deadliest attack in France in four decades.The satirical magazine gained notoriety in February 2006 when it reprinted cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that had originally appeared in Danish daily Jyllands-Posten, causing fury across the ‎Muslim world.Its offices were fire-bombed in November 2011 when it published a cartoon of the Prophet and under the title “ChariaHebdo”.Four of France’s best-known satirical cartoonists, including the magazine’s editor, were among the dead.

  • The Australian government has warned that terrorists were planning attacks in India, and urged its citizens to “exercise a high degree of caution” while travelling through the country.
  • Australian flag carrier Qantas has been named the world’s safest airline in a report published by      AirlineRatings.com Yesterday.
  • Using a system that takes into account audits from aviation governing bodies and governments, as well as fatality records, Qantas was named the safest and most experienced airline going into 2015, Xinhua reported citing the report.

2-National Affairs

  • The central government Yesterday launched a national toll-free helpline to provide assistance to people dependent on alcohol and drugs.
  • The move to launch the helpline number 1800-11-0031 comes close on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to the youth of the country to give up drugs in his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio programme in December.

3-People in News

  • Nobel Peace Prize winner ‎Kailash Satyarthi Yesterday dedicated his prize to the nation by presenting his medal to President Pranab Mukherjee in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
  • The President said on the occasion that Mr. Satyarthi is doing very good job which has been recognised by the international community and he has been given Noble Peace Prize.
  • Mr. Mukherjee thanked him on behalf of the people of the country.

4-New Appointments

Ali Kishor Patnaik took over as the State secretary of Odisha-unit of Communist Party of India (Marxist) ending the 24-year-long stint of outgoing State Secretary, Janardhan Pati.

5-Science & Technology

NASA Scientists announce discovery of 8 new planets outside Solar System, close to finding Earth’s twin.
Two of the eight are the most Earth-like of any known planets found so far outside our solar system.
The pair are likely to have hard, rocky surfaces in addition to being an orbiting distance from their stars that is neither too hot nor too cold for water – and possibly life – to exist.

6-Sports - update

Chennai Open 2015
Indian tennis veteran, Leander Paes along with his South African partner Raven Klaasen made a winning start in the doubles event.
